The current scenario is quite challenging for everyone, and for almost all industries across the globe. While some people have lost their jobs, some are uncertain. Civil Engineers are also affected by the situations and often many civil engineers whether employed or freshers are asking two important questions:

What will happen after lockdown?

What should I do being a Civil Engineer?

In this blog, we thought of addressing these questions.

What will happen after lockdown?

As we know the current situation of COVID-19 and the lockdown has not come with any manual or template of what and how things will be. As we can see, that process is evolving with every passing day. Whether it is lockdown extension, government policies, relaxations, or something else, everything is evolving as per the situation.

Construction Industry and COVID-19

The construction industry has got its own unique challenges, supply of material; supply of skilled; availability of semi-skilled and unskilled labour; availability of machinery and equipment and availability of experts as well as customers and other stakeholders. They all play a significant role in the smooth functioning of the industry. Impact on supply chain and transportation industry, social distancing norms, lockdown can be immediately seen in the industry.

Unlike a beauty salon, a construction site cannot just start by opening the shutters, the project management team has to manage and take care of all the factors before it can resume operations. Therefore the operations are expected to begin gradually and that too project-specific.

What should I do being a Civil Engineer?

Well, this is a great question. We can divide this question into two parts:

  • Challenges
  • Opportunities

What are the Challenges for Civil Engineers?

Lockdown and social distancing may lead to lesser operations in the construction sector and thereby lesser job opportunities.

Economical changes across the globe may affect the buying potentials of customers, thereby affecting the construction sector in totality and the domino effect will eventually reach to the people involved in it (civil engineers and other skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled workers).

What are the Opportunities for Civil Engineers?

Because of the movement of the workforce, from urban to rural areas due to COVID-19, new opportunities may arise for fresher as well as experienced civil engineers.

The changing trends in urbanization and preferences towards rural development may bring new and unexpected opportunities in the rural sector for civil engineers.

Government initiatives in the infrastructure sector are expected to bring new job opportunities.

Survival post-Corona

They say that history repeats itself and so does the evolution. As everyone is trying to come out of the situation, the ones who are well prepared and are taking efforts to empower themselves will be the most successful ones.

Being a civil engineer, it is the right time for us to analyze ourselves and to figure out, where we are standing today and where we wish to be tomorrow. Once you have understood your status quo and finalized your goal, all you need to do is to bridge the gap.

In most of the cases, this “gap” will resemble the skill deficiency. Throughout the nation, we come across many civil engineers, who are either pursuing or have completed their qualification on paper but are seriously lacking practical skills, which are required the moment you enter into the civil engineering industry.

Some of the key skills required are:

  • MS -Excel
  • Reading different types of Structural drawings
  • Applications of MS-Excel software in Civil Engineering
  • Bar Bending Schedule, Shuttering, Concrete (Column, Footing, Beam & Slab)
  • Quantity Surveying For RCC (BBS, Shuttering, Concrete)

We at Apaha Trainers and Consultants are working extensively towards the empowerment of civil engineers. Through our PG Diploma Courses, Training, workshops we have helped more than 14000 civil engineers to excel in their careers. In these tough times of COVID-19, we are facilitating Civil Engineers, with Online Internship Programs with internship letter and certificate. Online Internship at Apaha, has been designed in such a way so as to give you hands-on practical experience on real-life practical scenarios.

If you are planning to upgrade your skills and empower yourself, you can check out our upcoming Online Internship Programs for Civil Engineers.
